REACH ONE on Fridays
Round Lake, Illinois...Round Lake Area Park District kicks off a super summer for the area's "at risk" youth on July 9 with their Reach One community outreach program.
For 6 consecutive Fridays, from 5:30 - 9 pm, kids ages 9-15 are treated to a variety of activities, events that give them an opportunity to "come and play" in a safe and supervised environment.
The District's recreation department and Ranger/Police jointly run the program to help build a positive relationship with the Park District's Police/Ranger Department and area youth. Reach One's primary goal is to provide all children with positive role models as well as help them understand that there are many safe, good and wholesome activities and outlets available to them.
Participation averages about 100 kids per evening. Transportation is provided by the Park District and the fun starts just as soon as the kids are picked up at one of 6 designated stops. Through the course of the summer kids are treated to a varied line-up of activities including swimming, games, contests, fishing, theatre productions, concerts, nature hikes and other recreational outlets. Refreshments are donated and served by area church groups and the entire season culminates in a festive carnival at the Community Center on Hart Rd.
"Last year, over the course of the program, attendance grew from 34 kids on our first night to 112 kids on its final night", said Peggy Dohr, Assistant Executive Director of the Park District. "At the end of each session, the children were eagerly asking 'What are we doing next week?'"
One of the most positive aspects of Reach One was the interaction between police officers and children. All five villages that make up the Round Lake community provide officers to participate. The fun is contagious and the police enjoy the outings and activities as much as the children.
Great plans are already being made for the summer of 2004, but the success of this valuable program is dependent on donations of time and money from the community. The average cost to fund the entire program at its current level is projected to be about $10,000. To date, Baxter International has generously donated $2500.
"As our community grows, this program needs to grow," said Dohr. "Reach One gives kids the chance to enjoy their childhoods in a way that might not be accessible to them in their everyday life. We are counting on Round Lake to pull through for us again this year."
